  • G.H. Bass & Co. was established in 1876 by George Henry Bass of Wilton, Maine. It began with a man on a simple mission “to make the best possible shoe for the purpose for which it was intended.” A hard-won reputation for quality, comfort and durability is exactly what has kept Bass in business for almost a century and a half. Personifying the American spirit, Bass shoes have been worn for generations, shaping them into an iconic symbol of discovery, perseverance and self-expression. Our customers are born from the backbone of American history.  They represented our nation. They explored territories unknown. They defined pop culture.  They saw the world from a new perspective.  Bass was with them every step of the way, making it the choice for Adventurers and American Heroes. This isn’t heritage for nostalgia’s sake.  There’s a trusted and reliable way to make hard service footwear. GH Bass & Co. has perfected the technique over decades of development and innovation, adapting to meet modern challenges, proving that A True Original Is Always In Demand.
  • History of Bass Weejuns:  An unlikely tale dating back to the 19th century, with English sportsmen flocking to Norway to fish salmon. These English sportsmen had taken a liking to wearing locally crafted slip-on shoes. In 1936, G.H. Bass & Co. was commissioned to make the “NorWeejun,” marking a milestone year in the shoe industry. Bass introduced the very first slip-on casual – Weejuns – and established a style trend that revolutionized the men’s and women’s footwear business. Preferred by every school and college campus in the country, to historic Presidents and Hollywood Legends, Bass Weejuns have been a staple for some of the most influential subcultures in fashion history. When pay-phones were still ubiquitous and hadn’t yet been raised to a quarter, the penny loafer was often the source of funds for an emergency phone call home, especially for school-age children or teens on dates.  80 years later, Bass Weejuns continue to swing from one end of the style spectrum to the other, appealing to both men and women, and viable with everything from a suit to jeans, and even shorts.  The unique style of the vamp of the shoe has even been transplanted onto a high-heeled (and therefore non-loafer) version for women. Despite its presence in many fads, Bass Weejuns have long made a smooth transition from work to play.  All while remaining a simple, classic, and understated shoe with practical, long-term fashion value.
