The Madison Maison Shirt: A Love Letter to Shoes, Style, and Self-Expression

For more than 40 years, my world has been shoes. Designing shoes, studying shoes, building relationships with artisans, and understanding how something as simple as a shoe can completely change how a person feels. When we began developing the Madison Maison shirt collection, I wanted the design to be about more than fashion. I wanted it to have meaning.

The flame artwork represents exactly how I feel about shoes. They have been my passion for decades. They are my fire.

The Script

The script artwork was equally important. I wanted it to feel timeless and old world, almost as if it had been pulled from a handwritten letter or journal. But beyond the aesthetic, I wanted the words themselves to carry a message.

The text speaks about shoes as more than accessories. Shoes are tied to confidence, self-expression, memory, and emotion. The right pair can transform how someone feels. They become part of our lives, our travels, our celebrations, and our stories.

What surprised me most was how naturally the words came together. When I first read the final version, I didn't change a single word. It captured exactly what I wanted to say.

A Foundation, Not a Finish Line

This shirt is the beginning of something larger. I believe clothing can carry messages worth sharing. In a world where many graphic tees are either disposable or excessively expensive, I wanted to create something thoughtfully designed, beautifully made, and accessible.

The colors, artwork, and styling were developed to work anywhere in the world. Whether you're walking through Paris, spending time in Capri, visiting St. Barths, or simply enjoying a night out closer to home, the shirt feels appropriate. That's always my test for great design. If it feels relevant across cultures, generations, and occasions, then it has lasting value.

Working alongside April has been an incredible creative experience.

She brings tremendous artistic vision, passion, and openness to the process. Together we've begun exploring not only clothing, but also jewelry, belts, and future collections that continue to blend storytelling with design.

The Story Behind the Message
